SUMMARY:Sons and Daughters of Italy Gala - 2024
DESCRIPTION:Order Sons and Daughters of Italy\, Garibaldi Lodge held its 36th Annual Gala Dinner on Saturday\, March 9\, 2024 in the York Ballroom of the RBC Convention Centre. \n\n\n\nPresented by CentrePort Canada Railpark and Focus Equities\, this acclaimed event demonstrated the philanthropic spirit of Sons and Daughters of Italy\, and the caring and giving that Winnipeggers\, their businesses and leaders are known for.  \n\n\n\nThe 2024 Gala was held in support of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba’s “Better Futures Campaign!” \n\n\n\nAttendees enjoyed a welcoming reception\, an outstanding five course dinner\, fine wines\, engaging (and short) presentations\, and wonderful music that had the dance floor full.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Support of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba’s“Better Futures” Campaign: Children’s Hospital Emergency Dept.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChildren’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba is dedicated to ensuring that every child treated at HSC Winnipeg Children’s Hospital has the best care and experience possible. Funds raised by the Foundation support capital improvements\, life-saving equipment\, programs that bring comfort to sick children\, and health research to improve the lives of children everywhere. \n\n\n\nThe Foundation continues to inspire our community to support excellence in child health care and child health research. Currently the Foundation’s Better Futures $75 million campaign goal\, is Manitoba’s largest-ever donor-driven fundraising campaign for child health care and research. \n\n\n\nOne area of specific need in the Better Futures campaign that the SDOI Annual Gala is supporting is the Children’s Hospital Emergency Department (“ED”) which has many challenges to overcome: \n\n\n\n\nBuildings & spaces at HSC Children’s ED are no longer sufficient to address the volume of patients.\n\n\n\nEquipment\, systems\, and technology need to be upgraded\, replaced\, and enhanced.\n\n\n\nThe Truth and Reconciliation report has identified gaps in care for Indigenous patients in areas of acute care and mental health care.\n\n\n\nMore patients are presenting with mental health emergencies and the space is not ideal to treat them.\n\n\n\nSpecialized research into pediatric emergency preparedness\, knowledge translation\, facilities and services is needed to support kids across Manitoba.\n\n\n\n\nBy supporting the Children’s Hospital Emergency Department revitalization and research\, you can make the worst day better for a child needing emergency care. \n\n\n\nPlease help meet the goal. By supporting the Sons and Daughters of Italy Gala\, you are improving the lives of more than 140\,000 kids who rely on HSC Children’s and Children’s Hospital Research Institute each year. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoe Leuzzi was presented with the SDOI Heart of the Lion Lifetime Achievement Award\n\n\n\n\n\nSons and Daughters of Italy is proud to present our coveted Heart of the Lion Lifetime Achievement Award to a very deserving member of our Italian community\, Mr. Joe Leuzzi. \n\n\n\nThe presentation was be made at our Annual Gala on March 9th. \n\n\n\nThe Heart of the Lion Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual who has tirelessly given of themselves and has made significant contributions to the community.  \n\n\n\nIt is not an annual award; it is given in years where we wish to recognize the contributions made to the greater Winnipeg community by an individual of Italian descent. \n\n\n\nJoin us in thanking Joe Leuzzi for his valued contributions to our community. \n\n\n\n\nHeart of the Lion Lifetime Achievement Award\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEntertainment: Frank Moyo\n\n\n\n\n\nFrank Moyo is a slow player in a fast world. The Canadian-Italian singer-songwriter and guitarist serenades like a busking bard of the 21st century. His latest releases “Nonna” and “Insieme” have already cultivated a reputation for Moyo in his hometown. \n\n\n\nDescribing the singer as a suave\, smooth and sultry voice with soft hands on the strings is too simple. Discussing feeling with the artist is more candid. “I want people to imagine they are on a beach in Italy listening to my music\,” he says. But while one track might take you to the beach\, “another might take you into a car going 180 mph.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MohM0OCxy-c\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Meal\n\n\n\n\n\nGreat food is always a hallmark of any Sons and Daughters of Italy event and this year’s Gala dinner was amazing.  \n\n\n\nThe dinner featured  Italian salami and cheese in the antipasto plate. The second course featured a light and fresh salad\, leading to the next course of vegetarian lasagna. \n\n\n\nHopefully our guests saved room because it was time for the main course\, a beautiful filet of beef accompanied by fresh vegetables. \n\n\n\nDid we mention there was wine on the table? \n\n\n\nAs attendees leaned back to pat their tummy with contentment\, there was more!  A decadent lemon mousse cake was served along with coffee and tea. \n\n\n\nIf you now think that was it\, you don’t understand Italian meals. In the lounge was espresso and pastries! \n\n\n\nBut there was a great opportunity to lose those calories\, as soon the band started and the dance floor was full… \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAN ITALIAN MEAN NONNA WOULD BE PROUD OF:\n\n\n\nAntipasto \n\n\n\nProsciutto di Parma\, Genoa salami\, Capocollo\, artichokes\, roasted peppers\, olive medley and provolone cheese with mixed field greens and grilled eggplant brushed with extra virgin olive oil
\n\n\n\nInsalata \n\n\n\nButternut squash\, Swiss pickled apple & arugula salad with toasted pumpkin seeds with an apple cider vinaigrette \n\n\n\nPrimo Piatto \n\n\n\nVegetarian Lasagna with ricotta and spinach \n\n\n\nIl Secondo \n\n\n\nRosemary and garlic rubbed roasted filet of beef with a marsala & onion demi\, truffle cauliflower puree\, pecorino potato galette\, roasted oyster mushrooms\, glazed carrots\, and broccolini. \n\n\n\nDolce \n\n\n\n(De Nardi) Lemon Mousse Cake \n\n\n\nCoffee and Tea \n\n\n\nDessert & Espresso Lounge \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Chairs\n\n\n\nNancy Cipryk & Kirsten Mcconnel – honorary co-chair\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDan & Ina Potenza – Honourary Co-Chair\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMark Scaletta – Gala Co-Chair\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTravis Giavedoni – Gala Co-Chair\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSponsors\n\n\n\nMajor Sponsors\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCorporate Sponsors\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriends of the Gala\n\n\n\n\nFrank Occhino\n\n\n\nClaire Giavedoni\n\n\n\nJoe Strazzulo\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGallery\n\n\n\nAll photos by Mirek Weichsel\, Miro Photography \n\n\n\nGala NightSaturday March 9th\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresident’s Reception\n\n\n\nFriday March 8th\n\n\n\nThe “President’s Reception” is an invitation-only event to thank the major sponsors and contributors of the Gala for their support.

DESCRIPTION:Order Sons and Daughters of Italy\, Garibaldi Lodge held its 35th Annual Gala Dinner on Saturday\, March 18\, 2023 in the York Ballroom of the RBC Convention Centre. \n\n\n\nPresented by RBC\, this acclaimed event not only demonstrated the philanthropic spirit of Sons of Italy\, but also the caring and giving that Winnipeggers\, their businesses and leaders are known for.  \n\n\n\nThe 2023 Gala was held in support of Women’s Heart Health at the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation and we are so proud to have raised $270\,000 for this worthwhile cause! \n\n\n\nAttendees enjoyed a welcoming reception\, an outstanding five course dinner\, fine wines\, engaging (and short) presentations\, and wonderful music that had the dance floor full. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Support of Women’s Heart Health Researchthrough the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 35th Annual Sons and Daughters of Italy Gala is in support of Women’s Heart Health Research at the St. Boniface Hospital. Heart disease is the number one killer of women worldwide and it affects women of all ages. Women are just as likely as men to experience a stroke or heart attack; only their risk factors differ. \n\n\n\nPre-menopausal women who have heart attacks experience worse outcomes than men of a similar age. Post-menopause\, women are more likely than men to experience certain kinds of heart failure\, are more dramatically affected and are more likely to die. There is an immediate need to bridge the knowledge gap which informs the current approach to diagnosis and treatment of women with cardiovascular disease compared to men. \n\n\n\nCurrently\, Manitoba is the only province in Canada without a dedicated Women’s Heart Health program.  The long-term goal of this program is to better understand the sex and gender-specific differences in cardiovascular disease outcomes\, address the needs of Indigenous and other under-represented women and establish a dedicated women’s heart health clinic serving Manitoba women. \n\n\n\nRBC and Sons & Daughters of Italy\, with the support of our Gala Sponsors\, will provide crucial salary and research funding\, enabling the recruitment and retention of brilliant researchers who will carry this work forward. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHonorary Co-Chairs\n\n\n\nMabel Garcea\, Garcea Group of Companies\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMabel Garcea\, is a multi-business owner alongside her family\, ranging from interior design to various facets of the construction industry. In addition is a commissioner of oath and wedding officiant. \n\n\n\nMabel has devoted countless hours on fundraising boards for Winnipeg hospitals. She has devoted countless hours to fundraising for Winnipeg hospitals and brings a strong level of commitment to each foundation that she supports. Mabel has devoted countless hours on the fundraising boards for St. Boniface\, HSC\, and seven oaks hospital. Mabel brings a strong level of commitment to each foundation that she is a part of. She has the distinctive ability to create a connection of trust. Her capacity to listen to the needs of our health care system\, and create a well-executed strategy\, allows her to focus on specific objectives. \n\n\n\nCombined with her years of experience\, Mabel has a solid foundation rooted in community engagement and determination to get the job done and done well. Her present and most passionate endeavours are advocating for women’s heart health here in Manitoba. \n\n\n\nElba Haid\, President and CEO\, RealCare Inc. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nElba Haid\, an entrepreneur\, and philanthropist\, who is passionate about helping and serving others. She felt a very strong commitment to take on the role of honourary co-chair in this initiative because of the devastating impact of heart disease and stroke among women of all ages. Haid lost her mother to stroke when she was only 14 years old and growing up without a mother had a profound impact on her life. She believes in doing everything possible to save other young women from a similar experience. \n\n\n\nElba Haid is a trailblazer in this life-saving campaign\, and now Manitoba has six founding members\, the most in Western Canada. SUMMARY:Sons and Daughters of Italy - Encore / Gala 2021
DESCRIPTION:Bockstael Construction was proud to present the 2021 Sons and Daughters of Italy – Garibaldi Lodge Virtual Encore Event on May 1\, 2021 with proceeds benefiting the Bruce Oake Memorial Foundation. \n\n\n\nIn 2021\, the Sons and Daughters of Italy\, Garibaldi Lodge selected the Bruce Oake Memorial Foundation as the benefactor for our Encore Event.  “Encore\,” because in 2018\, the Sons and Daughters of Italy raised an impressive $250\,000 for the Bruce Oake Memorial Foundation. The large gift was recognized by the foundation by naming the stage in the gymnasium of Winnipeg’s new Bruce Oake Recovery Centre the Sons and Daughters of Italy Stage. \n\n\n\nAs in-person events have been affected by the pandemic\, we found it fitting to host our 2021 “Encore Event” from the Sons and Daughters of Italy stage in the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre. At the time of our event the recovery centre will be only days away from its official opening. Therefore\, we raised funds to support to the Bruce Oake Memorial Foundation’s “Save A Life Campaign.” \n\n\n\nOur Title Sponsor for the evening\, Bockstael Construction\, was responsible for the construction of the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre. Bockstael stepped up on a regular basis and we are so proud to have had them as our Title Sponsor for this event. \n\n\n\nThis event featured an evening of delicious food\, fine wine\, wonderful friends\, great fun and more importantly provided support for those suffering from addiction. Participants saw a few special cameo appearances from our exciting guests\, had a chance to win some great prizes and were mesmerized by the talent of Winnipeg’s own illusionist Darcy Oake. \n\n\n\nFinally\, the evening was capped off with our feature DJ and the ultimate at home dance party! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSDOI Encore 2021 was presented by:
